I started my first Tower project today! Throughout this internship, I have shadowed staff members in order to learn more about the roles they play at the Tower. Now that I have a better idea of who everyone is and what they do, I can start helping out more. During this visit, I worked with David Miller, the Manager of Communications. My job was to reorganize some of the Tower’s old archive photos! I did this by creating new folders and getting rid of old ones. I moved a lot of photo folders into one giant folder called “Artist Assets”. Once I had that done, I made some subfolders to continue organizing. I was able to finish all the work David had planned for me very quickly, so he gave me more tasks to do, as well! I went through all of the Tower archive photos to strictly find pictures of audience members. I took these pictures and put them into a new folder David created called “Audience and Customers”.
Going through those photos was a very bittersweet experience. On one hand, I was very excited to see pictures of myself and people I know! It was a great way to reminisce and remember happy memories from shows. To the right is a photo I found in the photo archive of Titanic: The Musical during the summer of 2020. On the other hand, it was quite saddening to see photos of our community before COVID. There were photos of filled audiences, happy toddlers getting snacks, fans hugging their favorite performers, etc. There was not a single mask insight. This pandemic has greatly affected the performing arts community and it breaks my heart to see how held back we are now. However, we must use these challenges as motivation to improve our performances and hope for a better future.
While I worked at the computer I got to chat with the wonderful Lisa Vann. I haven't been able to talk with her too much since our first meeting at the beginning of the year, so it was nice to catch up with her! She has been very busy at the Tower but is looking forward to The Wizard of Oz this weekend! I have been rehearsing at the Tower all week, and I have to say, I’m beyond excited, as well.
I ended up accomplishing much more with the photo files than David thought I would, which was awesome! I will have a lot more work to do next week with the project. It was very beneficial to learn how to use the software and navigate a computer program. This is a skill that I will consistently use in the future, no matter what field I end up going into. David and I are planning to meet again next Wednesday, so I will have more updates soon! Have a great week and come see The Wizard of Oz at the Tower Theatre this weekend!
